Norton nags

Is there a way to keep Norton AV on my w510, but disable the nag screens? There's no way I'm ever going to log that computer onto the net...upgrade or no upgrade. I also make it a policy never to buy or upgrade a product that nags with the only options being "register now" or "remind me IN ONE DAY."

Why would you want to keep Norton there? Especially as you are not logging your computer onto the net? In any case, there are free alternatives that don't nag you to buy them.

I guess to protect me from viruses that might hitch a ride on an SD ram card while copying data from one machine to the other.

Then you presumably won't be updating the virus definitions either, Daniel, in which case Norton will be fairly useless.

I agree with dr_st.

The current version of Norton isn't bad. But you'll need to download the "removal tool" from Symantec's site and run that to remove the program before installing any other security software. Otherwise, you won't get rid of all of Norton's tentacles, which will cause problems. On the freebie side, on my netbook I use Avast for antivirus, plus the Outpost firewall, which are light on use of resources, do a good job, and can be easily uninstalled (some of the other freebies hold onto your computer like grim death, and you'll have a heck of a time uninstalling them). Although you shouldn't expect any of the freebies to be as thorough as Norton.
