Just Ordered a W520...Question on using the SDD

#1 Post by CDKUTTNAUER » Sat Apr 02, 2011 12:18 pm

Just ordered W520, with 8GB (2 DIMM), FHD, 160GB SDD and Ultra Bay Adapter with a 500GB HDD. I have a few questions:

1. I know that with HDD's you never wanted to exceed filling it up more than 80% (or something close to that) for performance reason. Do you have the same concerns with SDD's?
2. With my current 200GB HDD on my T61p, the real usable space was around 180GB. What should I expect with the 160GB SDD?
3. I have a lot of data and a good number of programs. What would you put on the SDD vs. HDD?

Any advise on how best to manage this new ThinkPad would be appreciated.
Former IBM'er that still bleeds BLUE....

1. Its worse with SSDs: the less free space, the less possibility for wear leveling.

2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_prefix

3. Apart from putting large files on the hdd and small ones on the SDD?

This isn't always true. It depends entirely on the SSD. Some SSDs use free space as scratch space, some don't. If your SSD doesn't use free space as scratch, there is no downside to filling it to more than 80% capacity.

Personally, I'd put frequently used programs and data on the SSD, and save the HDD for large files (video, etc.)
