Question concerning the W520 shipping to Europe

#1 Post by freicher » Mon May 02, 2011 7:12 am

Hi!
I'm planning to buy the W520 from the US Lenovo online store, but i know that in Europe, there are different voltages. Europe uses a 220 volt/50 hertz system, the United States have 110 volt/60 hertz electricity. So my question is that do I have to purchase something in addition to guarantee that my laptop works perfectly or is everything ok straight from the box?

Welcome to the forum!

Everything will be fine, almost all laptop AC adapters are dual voltage, and switch automatically. This included lenovo power bricks. You will need to purchase a cable, known as "figure eight" lead for your country to plug into the adapter, they are dirt cheap on eBay. Everything is automatic and nothing else is required on your part.

Two quick notes:

During the EU harmonization the voltage in the continental Europe was raised to 230V years ago.

Lenovo US doesn't ship outside of the States.

It will still work, I can verify since I had 2 US laptops, 1 was a ThinkPad. They tolerate up to 240.

And yes, if you actually want to purchase directly from lenovo, you can't. You might be able to find a reseller, or someone who will be the middleman and order it and ship it to you.

Yes, I know that I can't order directly, but I have a freind :D

Still coming back to the question, can the power supply unit also switch between different voltages (it isn't the same as an adapter, is it).

Power supply and adapter are the same thing, it is an AC to DC adapter that supplies DC power to the system. It's auto-switching.

I have a US supplied ThinkPad W520 and it work fine with UK voltage. As I could'nt find a UK power cord for the "brick" power adapter, I cut the US plug off and replaced it with a UK one. It works fine, but if anyone knows where I can get a UK power cord for a W520 "brick", would they let me know. Lenovo only list a complete adapter on their accessories list.

Any 2 prong UK adapter will do, you don't need any special lenovo one. Search eBay for "figure eight lead" and you will find lots of listings. They are dirt cheap. Here's a link to a cable that I just bought for a T400.

But if I'm not from the UK and I have ordinary sockets (with two holes :D ), do I still need a new cable or not?

Yes, just to on eBay for your country and you will find the same type of cables I'm sure. You must mean the standard european style outlet?

Can I ship my laptop with a cargo ship or will the salty water/air ruin it.

Should be fine. The laptop will be sealed in a plastic bag inside a sealed box, so no problems. It won't just be out in the open on the ship either I would think.

About eBay, if the seller has good feedback and is known to be honest, then it should be fine as long as the laptop is described correctly. Before purchasing ask for details like the 7 digit machine type to verify on lenovo's website.
