It's not nearly as good as on a mac but I found that turning off the "Gesture Filtering" in the "Smart Check Settings" section for the touchpad properties, made it at least usable.

Just got a W520, first thinkpad since an X60 which I bought in 2005, great computer, but the trackpad just isn't even in the same ballpark as a macbook pro, I just stick to the trackpoint
