W520 - Ultrabay adaptor for HDD - gap

Hi,
I know there's an issue with the "official" ultrabay HDD adaptor III, leaving a fairly important gap at the top.
I know some unofficial vendors offer 12.7 mm models, but it's a shame the Lenovo one doesn't fit.
Now, this part actually exists since it's shipped with the W520 models incorporating RAID. I saw one and obviously, the adaptor fills the entier height, leaving no gap.
I'm trying to find out what's this part FRU/number. I might then be able to order specifically this part.
Anyone with a W520 RAID enable would mind looking on the ultrabay HDD adaptor and post the FRU ?
Looking in the maintenance manual, I suspect it might be the 60Y5513 part. A confirmation would be great.
Thanks

hi there Bonjour!
I have a W520 with raid
(see sign) and there are some " complications " with your suggstions
If you have the EARLIR W52o (sold with MICRO drives) then and only than YOU SEE theis "gap" you talking about!!! > since I was one off first ones to see this GAP and complain bitterly to LENOVo and trhrested to retun all 12 W520s ( work lalptops) THEY MADE a change and stopped offering mcro drive raids ,,, and than JAPAN happend and they couldn get micro drives anyways - so they took that option off
SO the Adaptor now = for "normal" HD (9.5 high not 7' - newer HD height that most X and some W series here desgned with and thus the GAP) ....
So you might want to look at your W laptop carefully and order accordingly. YES its a MESS when ordering 2nd Bay Adaptor !!!
here is that I think ( not sure) you
<need>
( I would DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE ORDERING ,,,,,as lenvo has very linmited stick of all adptors ,,, and to make matters worse ,,, noone really seems to know which is for which - even by looking at MoDEL SUFFIX numbers !!!
sorry to make it more confusing <<< c
cheers

The adapter still leaves a 2.2mm gap in the W520, T420, and the T520.
ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (43N3412)
Approximate height: 10.5 mm (0.4 in)
Approximate width: 128 mm (5.2 in)
Approximate depth: 133 mm (5.2 in)

You're right.
It fits nicely on my T410 but don't know about the W520
According to the Tabook it's the right reference !?? (

The FRU for the RAID adapter is 60Y5513. I located an unboxing video of this part (it's amazing to me that someone would do this for a FRU!) and it appears that it is composed of 5 items: the STANDARD 10.5mm caddy, a plastic spacer to fill the gap screwed into the top of the caddy and 3 foam rubber pieces to be placed on the top sides of the caddy. So it seems that a specific 12.7 mm HDD caddy does not exist for even the RAID configured systems. I've been looking at the HDD 12.7mm caddy offered by NewmodeUS as an alternative since Lenovo doesn't seem to be able to create a proper one for the W520.

I have the factory raid setup and it's not so much a plastic "spacer" to fill up the gap as it is a removable part that holds the hdd in place. If people really want a closer look I could probably take it out and snap some photos...

the W20 I have has MICRO DRIVES , and RAID 0
so you can imagine what weirdness is that setup > no wonder LeNOvo stop offerning that
Crazy for a company to make such huge changes in config's of a model - seems they go and make something fit and if it works they offer it ......and not much thought to "after sale" repairs and warranty issues.
Now I am told the MICRO DRIVES that are in my machine (if they fail) wont be replaced ....... such BS !! when U pay 3500$ and warranty is not really warranty!.....................ok ok I had my rant .....
I dont think it would be much use if I give you all the FRU numbers of the FILLER and COVER in question on my config sicne its not offered anymore..... and not sure how many crazy pple like me bought the EARLIERST W520 with RAID!
Cheers

The slight gap is not an issue at all, it is there so that you can use the same part in the T4x0s (slim) models.

Glad it's not an issue *for you*, and it's good of you to point out the upside... but it is an issue for some people, thus the various threads on the topic.
