W510 multi-touch screen---> can I move it to W520?

#1 Post by MarcusXP » Sat Aug 06, 2011 2:31 pm

Hi there,

I own a W510 with multi-touch screen and 95% color gamut.
I am thinking on switching to W520, but the latter doesn't come with multi-touch option.
Is it possible to switch the screens between the laptops (take the screen from W510 and move it to W520, and the other way around)?
If yes, how hard is it to do the switch, does it require some extra tools and lots of experience with dismounting laptops?
If it's not a big deal, I could just buy a W520 with lower quality screen, and keep the screen from W520 (which I like very much).

thank you,
-Marcus

I don't know, but it seems very unlikely. Consider... either the cable to hook up the display to the video card is identical between the two systems or it isn't. If it's different, you're done for; you won't be able to connect the LCD. On the other hand, if the LCD cable is identical, that suggests that there must be a second cable to carry the touchscreen information. Where are you going to plug that in on a W520?

They may have multi-touch support into W520 but they don't offer the option yet...
I guess I will find out after I open both laptops.. :)
