SATA III is backwards compatible with SATA II. The W700 and W701 are SATA II machines. SATA III drives will work, but at SATA II speeds.

Thank you Fred!

So if I am not wrong I would not be able to fully utilize the speed of the newest SSD drives, those that can do 4-500 MB/sec?

correct; backwards compatability, without the newer high speed.

If you're going to get another laptop soon that -can- support sata 3, it might be worth buying a sata 3 drive now and migrating it to the newer laptop later.

is the sata 2 limit a chipset limitation or has someone been able to make a new bios for it?
