Intel 6300 PCI ID modification for Lenovo W520

#1 Post by ThinkW520 » Mon Aug 29, 2011 10:21 am

Hi all,

I have a W520 with a 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI-e half mini card. I purchased an Intel 6300 wifi card with a PCI ID of 8086:1101. In order to pass the BIOS whitelist I need to modify the PCI ID to 8086:1111. I will not alter the BIOS (or have someone else alter it) for two reasons: 1) I don't want to risk bricking my computer, and 2) I want to change the card to be able to recieve future BIOS updates. I have another laptop available without a whitelist, however it has Windows XP (32-bit). I have done reasearch from this site http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... twork_card and it's links. I have also searched the internet on how to alter Intel EEPROM, but without luck. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks :)

P.S. This is the hardware ID incase that helps: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_422B&SUBSYS_11018086&REV_35
Lenovo ThinkPad W520 (4270CTO)
Intel Core i7-2820QM
NVIDIA Quadro 1000M
BIOS: 8BET45WW (1.25)
Windows 7 (64-bit, SP1)

hi there
seems a few pple are (trying) to do what you endevouring.....
even though I have few ideas; I AM LEGALLY BOUND and not able to provide full resolutions on this topic..
however , if you READ CAREFULLY the link you listed.....you might come across this steps...
....■Another safer method: You can plug the wireless card into the spare WWAN slot (the second miniPCI express slot) with pin-20 taped over. ....>>> OR Intel Wifi link 4965agn card, originally it gave a 1802 error, but using this trick it boots up and works without any apparent problem-- it essentially hides the card from the test in the bios, but the WWAN slot still gives the card access to the proper PCI bus, with no need to modify the computer or card. Pin #20 is located on the underside of the miniPCI Express board, second pin from the notch, on the side with more pins. Here is detailed MiniPCIe pinout. Combinations reported to work:
■Thinkpad X61s / Intel Wifi link 4965agn
■Thinkpad X61 / Intel 3945abg (bulk)
■Thinkpad X200 / Intel 5300
■Thinkpad T60p (widescreen) / Sierra MC8781
■On the Lenovo Y530 with an Intel 4965AGN, moving the card to the second miniPCI slot was sufficient. There was no need to tape any pins. Also with an X61t (7762-94G), an Atheros 5008X scavenged from a MacBook Pro, worked flawless (ok, without hardware switch and WLAN status LED) in the WWAN slot w/out taping.

sorry but hope this helps

The Intel 6300AGN has a locked EEPROM so you can't write to it with software. You'll need to unsolder the EEPROM and reprogram it. If you happen to have a chip programmer, the device ID's are in the first few bytes of the EEPROM.

Does the card you bought come with FRU? If so, it should work without any modification.
