Speed Concerns

#1 Post by RobertW57 » Sat Sep 03, 2011 12:12 am

My Lenovo W520 laptop just arrived. It's a nice looking machine but when I ran the Windows 7 Performance tests I was more than a little shocked with the first number:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2720QM CPU @ 2.20GHz Subscore: 4.5

This is quite a bit lower than my Dell i5 desktop (with a score of 7.0).

I don't possibly understand how an i7 processor can be so slow.

Can someone let me know what's going on?

Sincerely,

Robert W.

There are many different i7 and i5 processors. Desktop CPUs generally tend to be speedier than their laptop counterparts.

Which CPU is on your Dell desktop?
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

1) Sometime W7 runs background processes for the first few days that slow things down.
2) Make sure your power management is set for max performance.

Update drivers and your BIOS (be careful here). There is some known throttling with pre-1.30 BIOSes.

I get 7.5 on the i7-2720QM.

I'm getting 5.7 for Graphics and 6.2 for Gaming Graphics. Might be Optimus not kicking in right; games work plenty fine.
