Yesterday was an exceptionally good day, all day long. :thumbs-UP:
Never more than a few seconds delay.
Whomever did whatever, must have hit the nail on the (hopefully not temporary) head.
This morning it's still working nice, but delays are starting to crop up again here and there.
One minute it flies, the next you have to w a i t...

Just in case people are wondering:
I use a desktop for 99.9% of the time, with 6Mb cable, and an Asus RT-N66U Router with Gigabit ethernet.
OS is W7-Pro 32-bit, as well as dual-boot into XP/SP3 for older programs that I sometimes need.
To keep the speed up for wifi throughout the house, I also have a Diamond WR300N repeater near the living room,
especially handy for my ROKU 2XD, which works without any lagging whatsoever.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I too noticed some slowing today..

still moving stuff and will shortly move the 40GB database..
in sections.. without losing anything, I hope..
will do a backup before just for insurance..

I'll make a post here if the forum needs to go offline while doing any of this..

The last few days have been OK for me too, but this morning I've noticed a little lag, and got one SQL error.

Code: Select all

General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

Too many connections [1040]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.
Not a surprise, I guess, if you are currently moving data around.

Still slow to access and I just got a Too many connections [1040] error.
Let's see how it goes once everything is moved, but I doubt the access issues are merely due to a new IP which had been slow to propagate.

I just got the 1040 error too.

I also tried pinging the site, and had a 100% loss of my data packets due to the request timing out.

Fortunately, this is intermittent (obviously, or I couldn't post this). I just tried pinging again and all four packets were received.

Slow loading/hanging as of 5.55pm EST, but no errors.

Scratch that - just got one.

Got one 1040 yesterday, but was busy shoveling snow most of the day so I wasn't here as much as I normally am... :D

I couldn't get on this forum yesterday evening. Today I was having trouble as well. Yesterday and today I was getting a "504 Gateway Timeout Error". Finally I got through. Sometimes the page loads fast and other times slow.

I am having my own internet issues with my ISP, so its sometimes hard to tell if the problem is with my ISP or with this site.

Getting a lot of 'General Error' SQL errors. If I keep on refreshing the page, I can eventually get through, but it happens a lot and it is a bit annoying.

Ironically, the first time I tried to post this message I got one. :/

Since Sunday (12/15/13) it's all going downhill again, with sometimes (a few minutes at the most) things working fine, then the delays begin again, getting longer and longer.
Monday evening I couldn't get on the forum at all.
Tuesday was slow, but I rarely used the PC, due to crappy weather causing lots of snow shoveling.
And today I keep getting an increasing number of [1040] errors (too many connections).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Anyhow, just sent a few $ in support of a move/upgrade.

Yep, I haven't been able to log on most of the day, and from the looks of it, there are no posts between 10am, and about 5pm (my time) today, so we must have been off line during that time. Hope that means the migration of data was being done today, and all is now well.

sorry to say BUT i have NO IDEA what it means..
this and other web sites at the same server farm were offline, online then offline..
and today, dec 26, i have seem the forum offline and wellm, the same as yesterday but at least yesterday i wass able to reach the server farm owner..
today, no answer at his telephone..

it REALLY make me angry when the site is offline and so is the farmer..

i would launch into some cursing right about now but the filters would take those words out..

:flame: :flame: :flame:

edit:
just got an email from the farmer saying hes been working on this all day..
and he'll let me in on the secret when he is let in on what the FLOCK is going on..

A couple of 1040 errors last night, and quite a few this morning, regardless of the actual connection type.

That's not a farmer! He's a hired laborer at best, with no FLOCKING knowledge at all!
Get rid of him ASAP!
To get on this forum, for me it is waiting....., waiting...., some more waiting...., etc. A seemingly never-ending story!

i have been downloading FTP files, about 35gigs worth of recovery CD images and sets for various thinkpads AND 10+ gigs of log files..
i've had FAST connections doing the downloads.. 1.6+ MiB/sec total doing 2 files a time so when its working its fast..

once that is done i'll delete the log files from the server and either move the recovery CD images elsewhere or just delete them too and then the forum can be more easily moved to another server..

talking to the farmer just now there is either a switch thats going bad or a router that hes been trying to locate..

IF ANYONE HAS A BETTER IDEA TO sort all this cr@p out then let me know..

i asked for help from mods and admins and no one wanted to take on a managerial job for pay so i'll just continue doing the best i can with what i've got..

In all fairness, Bill is still doing his utmost (and a lot more really than we sometimes deserve) to keep this precious forum alive!
It's easy to complain and let others worry.
And if I'd been any younger I'd happily volunteer to assist in running matters...
Shortly after I joined this forum and had still very little knowledge of what was going on, there was a most interesting thread here.
Started by our (now) mod tfflivemb2 (Steve) in October 2006, it had this interesting title: Vote Bill Morrow as System Admin of the Year!!
Don't know if he won, but he certainly deserved it!
Then AND now!

first, admin of ANY year i deserve not..

second, still dealing with issues..
rebooting the DB from time to time..
which creates a delay or unavailability from time to time..

the forum is installed on a new and different server and testing is still underweigh (underway?)..

then we'll cut over to the new server when testing is done..

i'll probably take this version offline and then move the latest data to the new install so as not to lose any posts..

a warning posted will be before this is done.. :)

Oh, I thought you were just asking us if we had a problem if you hired someone and if we knew anyone who might be suitable. Didn't really see it as a job offer. :)

as it is well known that i am a conservative it is also quite obvious to anyone with more than 2 cents to rub together that my language skills are highly suspect and since i don't even have 2 cents to rub together my sentence construction devolves into the incoherent..
as for spelling, heh.. sadly lacking there, too..
just ask the spell checker, it'll tell you it is overworked and totally without any sort of salary (salt)..
so what i THOUGHT i was asking was not what any normal reader would have taken away..

again, what i thought i was asking was either a recommendation for someone who can make the hard decisions and get this place running as it should 'cuz if it does not start running we can all sit around and watch is sink, a'la RMS Titanic.. but at least with all flags flying and the band playing on deck..
hard decisions like some advertising to counteract lenovos flyers in each new thinkpad sold and to bring thinkpads.com back from obscurity.. :??:

ya think.. :)

and thank YOU, J for YOUR support and goodnight mrs. calabash whereEVER you are..
