this is usually evidenced by the GUEST users on line going over the more or less usual number of 75..
when this happens, these hundreds of guests are trying to register as a new forum member multiple times which will cause MySQL to be overwhelmed with requests which take some finite amount of time to dispose of..
thus one "guest" attempting to register, over and over, within a minute will generate an error message rather than serve up the web page another forum member is requesting..
I have tightened up some of the criteria so we shall see if this cuts these attacks down..
