Server Migration Complete - Report Issues or Feedback Here

#1 Post by mdvaldosta » Thu Sep 29, 2016 3:41 pm

We've completed the server migration and, if you're reading this, you're on the new server. Welcome! This migration was necessitated by the immense amount of traffic this forum receives. Upgraded hardware and more memory will help us keep things running smooth. We had about 20 minutes of downtime while copying the files and database over, and that was all. We did all we could to minimize the chance of you getting stuck on the old IP, including setting the DNS TTL at the old server to just 1 minute, a day in advance, and then setting the domain's a-records at the old server to point over here after the move. Nevertheless, some folks will have trouble for a few hours or even days connecting, due to DNS caching that's out of our control. If you know someone who can't connect, or you can't connect from a certain computer or without going through a proxy/VPN, then you have two options:

If You Can't Connect
  1. Flush your DNS resolver cache
  2. Edit your hosts file to hardcode forum.thinkpads.com to 198.57.183.30
For Geeks
For those technically-minded folks who want more details, we're on a slightly better processor with twice as much memory. This allowed us the opportunity to migrate from MyISAM to InnoDB tables and dump the entire database into the buffer pool. We also updated to Apache 2.4, MySQL 5.6, and php 5.6 w/ the fcgi handler and opcache. We also dropped the phpBB file caching in favor of using in-memory APCu caching. While none of the files were touched, we did have to run a script to fix file/folder permissions to ensure compatibility with fcgi.

Feedback Welcome
If you have any questions or comments about the migration, we're all ears. If you notice something wonky or broken, do let us know. Thanks for your patience!
