R32 Old Driver needed

#1 Post by GigaG » Fri May 26, 2017 11:06 pm

I installed Windows 98SE on an old R32 to use as a retro gaming machine. And everything works beautifully... except ACPI.

http://www.beezmo.com/ThinkPadR40Dir/TP ... ws98SE.htm

This site says he got ACPI working (mostly) on an R40 by using a driver that isn't officially supported on that combination of OS and laptop. So I'd like to try that here - installing the 1.25 version of the ACPI driver on a model that may or may not support it.

However, the only power management driver available on thinkpads.com is 1.25.01, which dropped support for 98 on the R30/31 and WinMe on the R32. Thus, it won't install on 98 AFAIK. I can find the readme for 1.25 by Google search, but not the .exe.

The only other power management driver is intended for 98 non-SE on the R30/31, which specifically says not to use it on SE. If it won't work on 98SE on its intended models, it probably won't work on 98SE on a newer model.

Basically, does anybody have a copy of the Thinkpad power management 1.25 (preferably) or perhaps older?

Did you try 1yku08ww (1.30) or 79ku03ww (1.33)? According to the text files they still support Win98/ME and R32.

^Doesn't seem to work. I tried 1.33 and 1.25.01 (which by some miracle installed) and the PC will still not wake up from standby/sleep mode.

It seems as if I may have to switch to APM. I've heard some people have been successful switching W98 to APM using the registry, but the method that IBM gives in the instructions is to re-install Windows using install files with the APM drivers "slipstreamed" in. Could I manually insert the APM drivers and change to APM via the registry? Any ideas?

Or would I just be better off dealing with the PC as is?

Come to think of it, I don't know if Windows is trying ACPI or APM or whatever... I frankly have no clue what's going on :/. I do know that I used a standard 98SE install CD.

Would a BIOS update do any good? I have version 2.01a, while the latest for this computer is 2.16.

Any advice? I read an old brochure for the R32 that advertises it as compatible with 98, so I imagine there has to be some way to get sleep and hibernation working with it. I'm not using any other OS' at the moment, so I should be fine if I have to reinstall for APM.

EDIT: Here it is:
http://pdfstream.manualsonline.com/f/f2 ... 5eb660.pdf

EDIT 2: There is a disclaimer saying OS's not preloaded on the computer may have non-full support. But considering that the guy from the first link in the first post got APM working on an R40 (only having issues when using it with Linux or another OS, which I am not doing), I figure that the R32 should be able to do it too. I just am confused on how to slipstream and reinstall. Do I have to re-burn the slipstreamed CD?

R32 predates the R40 by at least a year.
And don't forget that both laptops were made by Acer, not by IBM.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

^What does whether it was made by Acer have to do with this?

By the way, looking in Device Manager, I know for sure that Windows is in ACPI mode. I've heard on some BIOSes you have to disable power settings to let Windows handle it. Does this apply to the R32 or similar models?

The hardware as used by Acer was different from what was used by IBM.
And because of being Acer-made, both R32 and R40 did not have as much 'popularity'.
Maybe try some Linux instead?

^Windows 98 works perfectly besides sleep mode, and I'm using this machine solely for running programs that work better on Windows 98.
