R50E cooling upgrade?

#1 Post by FrontBackSide2Side » Wed Mar 17, 2021 2:19 pm

Just browsing through a few eBay auctions, I spotted a cooling fan for an R52.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1S3qA8U ... p=drivesdk

It looks like an extended version of the fan in my R50e

Does anyone know if it would fit the R50e and would it be of benefit?

I'm thinking it will help keep the chip to the right of the processor cool (sorry, I'm a noob and I'm not quite sure what that chip is, GPU?)

I just realised that my pictures would have been un-viewable which might be why have had no response to this thread. I have just changed the permissions on them now so you should be able to see them.🙂

I'm not sure if anyone has any input on this potential upgrade? 🤞

On the R50e, the chip to the right of the processor is the Intel 855GM northbridge chip, which contains the Intel Extreme 2 graphics. To be fair, if the engineers deemed it unnecessary to clamp a heatsink on it, it probably runs cool enough.

Ok thank you, I am inclined to agree with that.

Another thing I was thinking, I am upgrading the CPU from a 1.4ghz celeron to a 2.0ghz Pentium M which is obviously going to run hotter. This cooling fan has an extra cooling tube for the CPU, do you think this would be beneficial for my build?

The Pentium M may actually run a bit cooler because it has Speedstep (automatically downclocks to 600-800MHz when idle).
IMO it's better to install the Pentium M first and see whether it needs the heatsink upgrade or not. Run some benchmarks with the Celeron to get a baseline on temperature and performance, then do the same after the processor upgrade.

Thanks, I didn't know that 🙂

I'll do what you have suggested, I have already been keeping tabs on my temperatures so I'll be able to see any differences 👍

Just a bit of an update on this.

I did a stress test on the 1.6ghz Pentium M and the temperature topped out at 70 C with the original fan.

I fitted the new fan today and performed the same stress test, ambient temperature is warmer (although i didn't record values for that) and now the temperature of the CPU is topping out at 60 C.

So i would say this is possibly a good upgrade. First impressions is that the fan seems to be kicking in less often and only at lower speed but i will hold off on saying too much until i have used it a bit more.

When you say "the new fan" you mean you bought the one in the first pic (from the r52) and it fitted?

To be fair engineers shouldn't leave a chip-set, especially a north-bridge with graphics in it, totally uncovered. It's hot as hell and bold as an Athlon XP.
I just put a thin heatsink from an old m/b's south-bridge and helped a lot, especially with the lagging on youtube videos...

How did you secure the heatsink to the northbridge? Seems like an interesting mod.

There are thermal pads and thermal tape that you cut to fit which also has glue both sides.
It's like a 2-side tape with non-heat resistance thermal capability.
For small chips it doesn't need any other support.
I only had to cut a little piece of plastic over the chipset...
