R60 crazy turning on/off behaviour

#1 Post by Behemot » Tue Mar 23, 2021 7:58 pm

Got this R60 with the 2.23 BIOS with SLIC 2.1 viewtopic.php?f=5&t=101628 so chances are, the BIOS is screwed somehow.

I've been wondering why this butt is constantly discharged and than shouting its crappy alarms in the middle of the night. Turns out it its powering on by itself if you press ANY key or even just disconnect the power brick! Never seen any such crazy BS ever before.

When then running on the accumulator power, if I press the power button for a few seconds, after shouting all kind of crazy beeping on me, it shuts down and COULD NOT BE POWERED ON again unless I connect the power brick back, even though it has tons of energy in the accumulator. Is this normal? :banghead:

I found nothing in BIOS regarding waking or powering on, is there a way how to disable all that [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored]?

ADD// appears to be same problem as this guys https://www.electronic-servicing.com/ib ... arted_when I could not turn it off from windblows running from accumulator at all - it turns on by itself right away again! And shutting it down by holding the button makes it that it does not want to start again.

Might be a defective capacitor somewhere. That said, I don't have the proper skills to narrow it down.

Go to BIOS/Config/Power and see if you can disable something there, like Timer Wake or auto-switch-on when you plug in AC.

I can check again, but as stated already, there's pretty much nothing (very little settings at all). Some timers, all disabled, that's what I recall.

Tried different battery and also removing the HDD caddy from ODD bay, no change. Took different piece (R60e this time), that one behaves normally with still an original BIOS and components (CPU, RAM).

Guess I can try flashing the BIOS on it (the R60e) some day and see whether that does not have anything in common with it.

One last thing I did, I've upgraded the XGA display to SXGA+. Just some random one I found, it works fine, could a display have anything in common with the behaviour? I doubt it, don't think display could be waking motherboard, but who knows right.

Be aware that the R60e BIOS is different from the regular R60 BIOS.

Got the problem. Wanted to play with it again, this time I could not even turn the laptop on. Reconnecting keyboard resulted in immediate turn-on folowed by shutdown 5 seconds later.

So the problem in the end is stuck key, most likely even the PWR On key itself :D Replaced keyboard, now works fine.

Another interesting thing, with bad battery, OS boots into black screen, when I plug it in unning system, it hangs. Some very bad miscommunication with battery controller I presume.
