A31p no sound

#1 Post by qurinius186 » Fri Dec 30, 2011 11:36 pm

Hello im kinda new to the whole thinkpad community and i have a slight problem i recently bought an ibm thinkpad a31p for about 17 bucks.. got lucky. Everything works perfectly but i cant get sound from my speakers or the headphone jack. i know i have the right drivers. I believe it could be a hardware problem. I've even try booting a live linux distro and no sound. Also ive try taking apart the laptop to start looking for bad hardware but it has a strip screw that i can't get unloose. I didn't want to have to buy a screw extractor and a drill to get a single screw out so i looked around on the forums and bought Screw Extractor Friction Drops/ EZ-Grip and it still wont come unloose. So my question is does anyone have any tips for removing strip screw with ez-grip, and what signs should i be looking for once i open the laptop and peep around?

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, opening the machine is not likely to do much in this particular set of circumstances. A31/p units are infamous for dying sound cards, amongst other things.

You can purchase a PCMCIA sound card and get your audio back that way.

As for the stripped screw, where exactly is it located? A3x units are one of the easiest laptops to pull apart...

Good luck.
