A31-IBM High Rate Wireless LAN MiniPCI Combo Card issue

#1 Post by MAKAW » Mon Jan 02, 2012 11:30 am

I just picked up my 3rd A-31 (2652-Q5U) off ebay. XP SP 3 is the only application loaded. I'm unable to connect to my MiFi cellular router wirelessly. The wireless network is detected but when I try to connect I get "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again."

When I look at the Network Connection Properties, I'm not provided the WPA-PSK Network Authentication option, only Open or Shared. I've Googled this but nothing I've found has resolved the problem.

I can connect the MiFi directly to a USB port and access the internet from the machine. But I'd prefer to get the wireless connectivity working. Thanks for any help or direction you can provide.

Welcome to the forum!

The wireless card in question doesn't support higher forms of encryption AFAIK, WEP only.

Moving on to Intel 2200BG or Broadcom 4306/4309 would be my advice.

Good luck.

Ah - so trying to find a new driver is not the fix! Thanks. I'll stop looking.
I think I can disable the card or turn it off. Then may just use an external card in a PCMCIA slot. That's how my other two function.

Just remove the old wifi card and replace it with the new one.

Great reference manual. Thanks for the link. RealBlackStuff recommended an Intel 2200 BG as a replacement. In my reading, it says to order one from IBM to avoid other issues. I found part numbers for other series but not for the A31. Is anyone using the Intel 2200BG in the A31? Do you have an IBM part number?

Thanks again.

I have 2200BG in my A31p.

You might need a "no-1802" hack in order to get it to work in your machine.

Good luck.
