Locked out of system when CMOS battery goes

#1 Post by mmacomp » Mon Feb 06, 2012 7:39 am

Hi everyone,

I have two old Thinkpad R40's which both suffered the same problem after almost 7 years of service. I had set an administrator password and user password for both machines, and set the security chip on. One day, when I opened the computer I got an error message to enter the date and time, and the system would not log in using the previously set passwords. The computer still requested a login password on its first screen as always, but the previous passwords would not log in. I could not get past the password request to either enter the cmos setup or to proceed to the operating system. I thought the cmos battery had gone and replaced the cmos battery but the password problem remained: I am locked out of the system.

Does anyone have any ideas on this problem?

Thanks,

Michael
