r31 won't boot, blank screen, dvd-rom spins

#1 Post by abbba1 » Sun Mar 11, 2012 8:36 am

Hi

Having some strange behavior lately.
My r31 won't boot, the screen stays blank and the DVD spins continually even when there's no disc inside.
Eject button doesn't ejects the tray.

Any ideas?

Thanks

If you remove your hdd, Do you get the blinking cursor after a PXE- Error (OS not found)?? Does it pass POST??

Maybe your hdd may have failed.
If you have a USB to IDE cable you can connect it to a different computer to see if files are still accessible?? If they are, you hdd is still working.

I began with removing the hdd which didn't help, then I removed the ram sticks and tested.
Then I got the lovely thinkpad logo, put the ram and hdd back and the laptop seems to be fine.

I just hate computers for this. You do some meaningless remove/reinsert voodoo action and it solves the issue :)

If the sticks might be the culprit, I suggest testing them with memtest. Most people let it run 8 passes (one stick at a time), I let it run overnight as the test is time consuming. Just to make sure it was just them working their way loose.
