Reasonable Price For a Deceased A31p

#1 Post by Nycto » Wed May 02, 2012 11:21 am

So I have recently assisted my boss in purchasing a Thinkpad W500 for his son to use as a machine for programming on, playing computer games, etc. He has, in return, offered to work out a deal on the computer the W500 is replacing, a burned out A31p (motherboard failed). The type number is 2653-R5U

The machine has 1 GB of RAM (512 x 2), and I believe a 40 GB hard drive in it.

Cosmetically, it is about what you would expect from a machine that's seen a near decade of use. The only glaring 'blemish' is the Lansing Community College decal printed into the lid - this machine was sold off as surplus a few years ago.

My chief interest would be in the LCD panel, as I have an A31p of my own, and it would be nice to have a spare parts machine on hand in case my own A31p has a mishap.

If I recall correctly, it has a docking station and two genuine power bricks as accessories.

My question is then, what is a reasonable base price for the laptop and its accessories?

Any input would be appreciated!

I think free would be reasonable for such a ThinkPad. I suppose the HDD, RAM and screen would have some value, but they are all old and no telling if, or when, they are going to fail. AC adapters are worth about $5/ea and the dock...not much. If you are feeling generous....$25 might be reasonable for everything.

I'm with Neil on this one...the most valuable component - motherboard - is gone...so $25 is about right, presuming a decent screen. If it's an exceptional one, maybe a few bucks more...

If you end up buying it and parting it out, I'm interested in the lid without the screen...but with the BT bezel/switch.

Happy hunting.
