Not to appear pedantic, but I fear there will be a wide chasm between this announcement and when we will be able to put our hands on these beauties.

Sort of like the deal with the 5400RPM 120GB HDs, they're only available in 100Gb to date.

I've been all over my two favorite retailers' (newegg and zipzoom) respective butts about when they'll actually have these drives and their answers continue to range between "I don't know" and "earliest would be 30 to 45 days". Nor will either give a firm answer as to pricing beyond "figure around $400".

But I've already reconciled myself to bite the bullet and grab one of the 7K100s at the earliest opportunity.

I will check out Fry's

They usually get the hardware within a week of a release. I will check over there for availibility and pricing.

I have it on good authority from a contact at Seagate that the units are on backorder for OEMs, let alone retailers.

The 5K100 was almost 60 days between the announcement of availablility and when the retailers actually had them in hand.

A pox on you for not having updated your profile with your location! (Pleading hasn't worked!)

Max HDD sizes - A21M & R40

#7 Post by jeffr » Thu Jun 09, 2005 8:46 pm

Which of the Seagate (or other) drives would you recommend for an R40 (2722) and for an A21 (2628)

Do you know if there are maximum disk sizes in the BIOS or drive speed limitations for the R40 & A21?

IBM only have 80gig HDD (Part # 09N4272) info for these machines.

Can these PC's use 120 gig drives?

Not yet. I broke down and bought the 5400 rpm drives. But the etailers are starting to show the stock numbers and price - but as of yet have no eta on availibility.

I might wait until Hitachi releases their drive. Some strangeness with acoustic management and reading the S.M.A.R.T information on the current set of drives I have leads me to believe that the Hitachi drives may actually be a better drive overall - but the jury is still out.
