R60 Advice
Hi, Im looking for some advice
I am looking at buying a R60 for karaoke use, I use to use a T23 but over time the hard drive got full and machine could not keep up with the load, I upgraded the processor and hard drive, but there is only so far I could go, and IDE drive is slow with lots of files.
I need a good laptop that can be used for work and will not crash on me (That's why I want a IBM), I also need a s-video port for connecting to a TV.
Would the R60 be useful for this?
Has the 14" and 15" got S-Video out?
What is the maximum processor the R60 can handle?
Whats the maximum RAM the R60 can handle?
And ... will the R60 support SATA 2 ?
Or can someone tell me a good IBM I could use with S-Video out?
Thanks

Re: R60 Advice
Hello there!
R60s are pretty neat, i'd imagine it'd make a decent... karaoke machine. I suppose I have nothing against you wanting a Thinkpad specifically to fulfill this role.
I'm not sure all of them have S-Video out, I recall they do.
The best processor found on R60s is the 1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo, the least powerful you'll find are the Celerons that run at 1.6 GHz. More then enough for video playback and holding a music collection, and running Windows 7.
I'd imagine RAM is the same story as my Z61t, the bays can *technically* fit up to 4GB of RAM(2x2GB sticks) but I advise only fitting 2GB(I have it in 1x1GB sticks, cheaper configuration) as 2GB is enough to keep Windows 7 behaving properly, and more than enough for basic multitasking. If you're planning on running XP, R60s came with 512MB or 1GB standard. Which that's more than enough, so in that case you could leave it alone.
I'm not sure about the SATA-II thing, someone else will likely pop up with an answer.
As for other IBMs with Video out, I think the choice you've made is pretty good. R60s(or basically anything in the so and so -60 gen except X-series) will do you just fine, as they're all very usable, they all can run Windows 7 and can work with up to date software.

Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

Re: R60 Advice
Hi, Thanks for the advice,
Ive been looking around the I see they do a "Intel Core Duo (Yonah) 2.33 GHz" CPU that fits in the R60 and correct me if I'm wrong but is that not faster?
I understand the Duo2 has the 64bit but that's not going to give it as much power as a 2.3GHz is it ???
Thanks

Re: R60 Advice
Here's a list of Thinkpads with S-video out:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/diagnos ... D=HT003603
The 'newest' machines in that lot are the Z60m and Z60t.
These are related to the T43 family, with max. 2GB RAM, 2.26GHz Pentium M (Dothan) and SATA I.
No newer models have TV out, not even on a port replicator or docking station.
If you want to stay with Lenovo, then the Lenovo 3000 N200 has S-Video.
It's missing the trackpoint that Thinkpads have, though.
It's technically almost comparable to the T61/R61 family, with up to 8GB RAM.

Re: R60 Advice
My 15" R60 had a s-video out while the 14" did not.
The R60 will not support SATA II, but it's probably not an issue as no hard drive can surpass SATA I speeds.

Re: R60 Advice
R60 15-inch models most likely does have an S-video port, as evident from the HMM. R60e/R60i models most likely does not have one.
