BSOD after swapping HDD

#1 Post by gord1651 » Wed Sep 26, 2012 2:39 pm

I have a R30 with a 30Gig HDD. I tried swapping the HDD from my T23 (60 Gig) but I get the BSOD screen telling me there is a fatal error. Any Ideas? Both drives are ATA/IDE, the only difference I can see is the capacity and RPM. :?:

Probably a chipset/driver issue.

Graphics are different between the two, and significantly so. More than enough for a BSOD.

The BOSD is caused by the chipset and HDD - driver. It crashes, when Windows loads it.

But it will work after running devcon.exe on the old computer:
Download devcon: http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... US;Q311272
Unpack it
  • Start -> Run -> "cmd"
  • cd /D C:\WINDOWS\INF
  • <path>\devcon install "mshdc.inf" PCI\CC_0101
  • Shutdown
Swap drive into the new laptop
Turn on and boot - it will take a longer time

On the new laptop:
  1. Start -> run -> "cmd"
  2. cd /D C:\WINDOWS\INF
  3. <path>\devcon findall * > hwlist.txt
  4. for /F "tokens=1,2 delims=:" %i in (hwlist.txt) do @for /F "tokens=1,2 delims= " %a in ("%i") do devcon remove "@%a"
  5. <path>\devcon rescan
  6. Reboot (takes a long time to start up)
Take care with the spaces in item "4."
I have used it several times to swap HDD with OS to newer ThinkPads and ThinkCentres even with cloning from IDE to SATA-HDDs after the first "devcon" - instruction.
Thinkpads: 390, 570, A20m 15", A20m 14", T22, T41, T41p and a lot more...
