R51 - probable MoBo out. Suggest & Help Please
R51 - probable MoBo out. Suggest & Help Please
My old reliable R51 - 1836H8U has died... purchases just months before the Lenovo acquistion.
Being too over-confident, I removed the keyboard for a good cleaning. Immersed in soapy water. Probably did not dry it well enough before re-install and power on.
- No power status lights, except a very brief battery status (batt. not inserted).
- Some Beeps: One or two.
Now it won't show any indications of AC power, nothing at power on.
Please refer me to a suitable MOBo replacement (it's a leap on my part that the MoBo is the failure ... isn't the pwr. supply (and most everything else integrated) on the MoBo?
I have the official chassis manual, and just 3 weeks ago (from lurking on the board) upgraded the CPU to the (Dothan, I think?) SL7EP version and RAM to 2 Gig. The task went well, the Thinkpad performed very well, except for a little more heat and fan duty cycling, but that is to be expected.
- Been looking on EBay, R51 MoBo are advertized.
Help Please. I really like the lappy, I need it for the S Video and VGA outputs.
Questions:
* If I go with a direct R51 board, and since my ver. is the 1836H8U, how do I distinguish the items on EBay ?
** There seems to be, IIRC, from lurking around this site, that (possibly) I could re-fit this R51 with something from the same generation, but with more robust-ness? Wasn't there a (R?) 42(?) or something that has the same form factor... but maybe a better CPU and a matching fan for the heat factor?
Sure hope some of you mavens are around to respond.
I have a bench tech. background, (but not in computers), the proper tools, and an eye for detail, so I feel good about the repair here at the house, jsut need alot of advice.

Re: R51 - probable MoBo out. Suggest & Help Please
I agree with your diagnoses...that is that you killed the board by powering up before it was completely dry.
Any R50, R51 or R52 (and T4x boards also) are a physical fit, but the R52 (and T43) boards won't be able to use the RAM or CPU you already have, so I would avoid them if I were you.
Your 1836H8U has the ATI GPU, which you will need if you have a display resolution higher than XGA. Type numbers that start with 28 instead of 18 have Intel graphics. That's the only significant difference between R51 motherboards.
I happen to have a brand new motherboard that is a direct replacement for the one you have. It's never been installed, but the seal on the box has been broken, because I opened the box myself to examine the board. It doesn't look like I'm going to be using the board after all, so if you're interested, send me a PM.

Re: R51 - probable MoBo out. Suggest & Help Please
If it happens to be your keyboard, I have one that I pulled from an R51 recently. It just stopped powering up one day. The lights came on and the fan spins but no beeps so I have no way to test it but I can sell it to you if you need it.
