How to get SSD working right on my R50e?
How to get SSD working right on my R50e?
Hello everyone,
I have a problem with getting SSD working right on my R50e. The problem is that my computer freezes very often (especially when browsing heavy web pages and so on) and I don't how to fix it. I tried to find information on your forum, but I could not find specific information on how to do it. Maybe it's not possible? The only thing I found that R50e hardware is similiar to T4x and they both has the same Intel storage controller.
My R50e (1834-S6G) running Windows XP Professional (SP3) and has Trancend TS32GPSD320 2,5" IDE SSD (formatted as NTFS). I have done everything to optimize SSD performance (turned off prefetch, defragmentation, indexing, page file, system restore and so on), but it doesn't help to avoid freezes. Computer boots very fast (16-17 seconds) and some tasks works very well, but another ones (like web browsing) irritates me due to freezes.
I hope that you will help me solve this. I will be grateful for any help and information!

I would suspect driver and firmware issue. Check that the SSD is running the latest firmware. On the OS side, check the chipset and SATA drivers. Ensure that the SSD is the problem and not something else. If you have a HDD kicking around swap it in and see if that is causing the same problem. Alternatively a live Linux OS will also work.

No SATA drivers involved in this equation.Cigarguy wrote: On the OS side, check the chipset and SATA drivers.
OP has a R50e which runs a PATA SSD.
My hunch would be that it's the less-than-desirable combination of XP (not an optimal OS for SSD) and a SSD with a spotty - at best - reputation in itself...

Re: How to get SSD working right on my R50e?
I checked SSD firmware and it's the latest one. Chipset drivers also the latest. SSD has PATA interface not SATA! I have HDD which was in R50e before SSD - it's slow but doesn't freeze. Ok, I will try to boot Ubuntu from CD.Cigarguy wrote:I would suspect driver and firmware issue. Check that the SSD is running the latest firmware. On the OS side, check the chipset and SATA drivers. I know that Windows XP is not optimal OS for SSD, but I think that R50e is too old for Windows 7 (hardware compatibility and so on). I remember that I had Asus EEE PC with SSD which runned Windows XP and that computer worked very well, so I don't think that it's the main problem why R50e is freezing.ajkula66 wrote: My hunch would be that it's the less-than-desirable combination of XP (not an optimal OS for SSD) and a SSD with a spotty - at best - reputation in itself...

I deleted IBM/Lenovo Power Managament drivers/software and now computer works much better, but still freezing. Any suggestions?
Re: How to get SSD working right on my R50e?
I have the same issue with my z61t.
It seems to freeze mainly after it has recently restarted. If I just suspend system and do no power it down I dont notice the problem. I have Muskin SSD.
Cant figure it out and have tried everything I can think of. Drive works great and is very fast besides the random hangs which last up to 60 secs.
My best reasoning is it just an incompatibility with the SATA controller.
Upgrading laptop soon so I have given up trying to solve it. Good luck with yours.

That's your problem right there. Mushkin's SSDs have a horrible reputation.kenzking wrote: It seems to freeze mainly after it has recently restarted. If I just suspend system and do no power it down I dont notice the problem. I have Muskin SSD.
Not by a long shot. I've ran Crucial SATA III SSDs on machines older than that Z61t with no issues whatsoever. My best reasoning is it just an incompatibility with the SATA controller.

Re: How to get SSD working right on my R50e?
I asked the same question a while back and someone told me the thing. Going to try it in another system and see what happens because im way past my return / exchange time frame. It runs great besides this strange hang issue. Not by a long shot. I've ran Crucial SATA III SSDs on machines older than that Z61t with no issues whatsoever.
I agree with you. By incompatibility I am not blaming my z61t, it had got to be the Mushkin drive.

Re: How to get SSD working right on my R50e?
... if you, sooner or later, get to the point where you decide not to mess any longer with your present troublesome SSD, then there exist an option to achieve a very speedy IDE/PATA-HDD-generation ThinkPad through implementing a 1.8" SATA SSD with a 2.5" PATA-converter. While I haven't seen or read about anybody taking this path in a R5x/p ThinkPad, it is very succesful in e.g. T42's; read more through the sticky GUIDE: Make your T4x *FAST* by replacing the HDD with a SSD!.
Kindly report back if any of you ThinkPad R, A, G and Z-owners try this out... thanks!

I'm also considering the Transcend TS32GPSD320 to replace the original 40 GB 4200 rpm HDD in X31. Still problems with the SSD ?
