Fastest CPU for a Thinkpad R50e?

#1 Post by BillG » Mon Nov 26, 2012 12:58 pm

Right now I have a 2.0GHz CPU (SL7EM) in an R50e. Works great.

Today I tried to replace that CPU with a 2.5GHz (SL6P2) and a 2.4GHz (SL6VC). The R50e refused to boot with either - pressing the power button got absolutely no reaction as if the unit had no power. I replaced the 2.0GHz and it worked fine.

While there is the outside possibility that both CPUs are bad, I'm wondering if possibly the R50e is set to support only a max CPU of 2.0GHz. Any ideas?

Consider yourself lucky for not blowing the board.

SL6VC is P4M not PM that your machine requires.

You already have the second fastest CPU applicable to that platform. My advice would be to leave it as-is.

Ah. So, Pentium Mobile <> Pentium 4 Mobile.

So the fastest processor I can put in this is a 2.1GHz (SL7UZ, SL7V3)?

And they are expensive enough ($60+) to not be worth the upgrade. I can equip a complete R60 system for about $90, and that's a Core Duo.

BTW, with a 2.0GHz CPU, 2G RAM, and a Seagate 7200.1 hard drive (one of the fastest laptop IDE HDs), the Thinkpad R50e WinXP SP3 runs like a champ. Lots of registry tweaks to keep Windows functions in RAM. Pagefile is set 1024 (on slower systems, allocating a lot of space for the pagefile slows Windows).

Browser of preference is Firefox 3.6.28 because Firefox 3.6.x is stingy on CPU and RAM compared to Firefox 10+ (yes, I ran benchmarks).
