overclock A31

#1 Post by ganon11000 » Tue Dec 25, 2012 10:10 am

I've overclocked my GPU but was wondering if it's possible to overclock my CPU, 1.7GHz 99MHz fsb
IBM Thinkpad A31 2.0GHz Pentium 4, 768MB RAM, 40GB HDD and a ATI 7500 16MB shimmed
Lenovo T420 4236-PA8: WiFi card replaced with a Broadcom one (fixes most DPC latency), 64GB Crucial M4 SSD added as OS drive, original HDD in a DVD to HDD caddy.

That's an excellent way of killing your GPU which is failure-prone to begin with...

And yes, a 2.0P4M CPU can be had for a couple of quid nowadays...

Oops (thank god I didn't break it) I'll settle for what it has as changing the cpu means opening the whole laptop and costs £30+ when I looked on eBay!

and is 30oC idle & 60oC Max load safe temps?

what do you mean by "failure prone"?

Opening an A3x unit to change a CPU takes less than 15 minutes even if you've never done it before. Take it someone who can do it blindfolded at this point in time...and you likely looked at the wrong CPUs...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Pentium-4 ... 2a13e0b40e

$26 shipped...and I'm sure you can do a lot better locally, within the UK...

Please note that I'm not associated with this seller in any way, and proceed at your own risk if you choose to purchase the item.

A3x generation wasn't conceived to be a gaming laptop when new, and definitely not at ten years of age...

Ok, since I game I'll hope it lasts (60oC is the gaming temp so it's not overheating?) but it was only £8.80 :) + repairs £20 + battery £30 = £60 and I get 30-40 FPS so it does a good job :)

OK, I'll use it for browsing and not so much gaming (although its needed when I'm at my mates house because I can't carry my custom desktop around! :p ) and is this a good CPU, or will it eat loads more battery?? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 1174237282

Wrong CPU for that machine...try this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Pentium-M ... 43b7091330

You'll also need a different fan/heatsink once you go over 1.8 BTW...

if I need a new heat sink its not worth it (I know mine is modded, is a 3500rpm fan speed for the 1.8GHz+ heatsink?)

and I did some testing with TPFC and the sensor guide I found on here and found:

Idle: CPU 35oC GPU/NB 46oC & power things / converters (CRD 0x7A) 38-40oC

Playing TrackMania: CPU 50oC GPU/NB 49-51oC & CRD 50-51oC

surely 5oC difference won't harm it?? (and it changes by about 1oC a minute)

TPFC doesn't pick up the GPU sensor on A3x series...so you have no clue how hot the card is running.

Oh, OK it seems to be the only thinkpad that can't read GPU tempreture :(

So, to prolong the life of it: no overclocking , no heavy gaming, don't mess with it, keep the HDD defragmented, keep CPU below 60oC and don't use GPU intensive stuff if possible?

Not really. A number of older ThinkPads are in the same boat. T4x/R5x were the first ones that would give out somewhat accurate GPU temp readings.

Never turn it off or put to sleep. When not in use, just shut off the LCD. Use, but don't abuse - just like any other oldtimer.

My home / fire insurance doesn't cover electricals that have been left on and not switched off plus it'd cost £60-£100 a year with the price of electrisity its cheaper to buy a new one every year :/

A computer that consumes maybe 15W (let's say 20W tops) would cost that much over a year?

A bit OT but insurance is legitimized mob in UK, just look at the idiotic car insurance rates. I wonder how they afford to drive any car, let alone a fast one there...
