R40 Recovery Disk, Where to find?

#1 Post by aPanzerIV » Fri Jan 18, 2013 6:19 pm

Alrighty, so I've finally gotten the money to fix the r40, type 2897, that has been sitting in my attic for a year. I no longer have the origional drive for it, lost it a long time ago, and I remeber how much of a pain it was to pick out the needles from the haystack from lenovo drivers, point is, I want to find a recovery disk for it.

I found one here: http://www.thinkpadrestore.com/Thinkpad ... lash-e.htm

But they want $25 for it, it doesn't say it supports my model, and its not even for windows xp!

Any other recovery disks? Is it possible I could order one from lenovo? Or find an ISO for one online?

If it is the actual R&R discs, or a copy of the actual disks, $25.00 is a very fair price. I have X30,31 and 32 as well as T30 discs and mine are price comparable.

I picked up a set of Z60/61t discs for the same ($25.00), with 6 discs in the set.

The R40 is older and getting long in the tooth. The discs will be horribly outdated. Not trying to discourage you, on the contrary I prefer a factory delivered machine, however the update process is going to be extensive.

If you find a set, go for it. If not load XP and call it good.

Ok, After looking on the site where I found the 2000 disk, and I found an XP recovery Disk, but it still doesn't say it supports my model, it supports: "2681, 2682, 2683, 2684, 2685, 2722, 2723, 2724", will it work with my 2897?

I understand this computer is outdated, I have much better computers sitting in my room, I just decided to fix this one instead of having it sit in a box upstairs.

All R40 series share the same recovery disk set.

I've got one sitting somewhere, can look for it if you're interested. That's XP SP1 or thereabouts, though...

That's fine, I'll buy the one online. I haven't even gotten the parts for it yet. I don't remember what I did to it but somehow its missing a lot more than the motherboard.

Is the whole "series shares same disk" thing true for ibm's other laptops? I have a R52 on my desk that I've been experimenting with linux and would like to put windows back on it. I found a disk on another site for $15 for the r52.

edit: I made the last part abeit confusing, I found a disk for an r52, yet again my part number is not in the list, mine is type 1859, hope it clears it up :)

R52 palette uses two different sets of disks, one for units with ATi graphics, and the other one for Intel graphics.

That being said...you can mix & match, and then load the proper graphics driver once the OS is installed. Been there and done that more times than I can recall...

The weird thing is, the disk gives supported models of both types, only one of the supported is intel type like mine.

"1846, 1847, 1848, 1849, 1850, 1858 " all but 1858 are ati models.

There is also only two disks, one is cd's and one is dvd's, both support same models.

These are NOT the original disks, I'll tell you that much.

You can also use T43 recovery disks which are the same as the "genuine" R52 ones.

The 2-disk set (1 boot-CD and 1 DVD) works the same as the original set (6 or 7 CDs).
When one first created a restore set from a new IBM laptop, you had the option of making all CDs or 1 boot-CD and the rest on DVD.
