R60 Hinge problems?

#1 Post by Blzut3 » Fri Jun 07, 2013 11:28 pm

My mom just broke her 2nd set of hinges on her 15" R60. Are weak hinges a known issue with the R60 or is my mom really rough on the laptop?

I would definitely not call the hinges weak. My hinge broke after my wife crash-landed on the laptop (with her full weight). The part where it broke was the bit right next to the screw inside the laptop i.e.: the hinge was no longer screwed to the chassis.

Other than that, we've sat on it, stepped on it, my daughter used it as a trampoline..

The OP was asking about the hinges themselves, not their attachment to the chassis.

When it comes to hinges, these one-time assaults are far less damaging than repeatedly opening and closing the lid. Blzut3, ask your mom to open and close the lid slowly and see if the replacement will last for longer -- it should. Yes I have read about R60 hinges breaking but don't know how widespread the problem is.

And what exactly was wrong with my answer then? The part of the hinge that has a hole for the screw broke off.

Again, those horrible accidents are in addition to every day use for over 5 years. The laptop sustained so much abuse and damage, almost every plastic cover had to be changed due to cracks and bits broken off. Fortunately, I managed to buy a broken one on ebay for spare parts so it still works and looks just the way it did when I bought it.

Hinge was just the latest bit I had to change.

Thanks for the replies. I have a feeling the problem is indeed swift opening/closing from the corner. It's the right hinge arm that breaks just below the bottom screw. My mom isn't exactly the kind that likes to be told what she's doing wrong, but I'll see what I can do.

Take a look at this thread

Seems like it would be worth it to give this a try if it applies to your sitch. Good luck :)

I don't believe this is the same issue. The base of the laptop is fine. The screws I'm talking about are the three on the side of the display that attach to the hinge arm. Just below the bottom most display screw the arm shears thus removing all leverage on the hinge.

The only way I can think of that may be able to reinforce the hinge would be to stick a metal rod in the arm where the wireless antenna runs normally, but I don't this would be enough to have any significance.

I could see if my dad still has the old hinge and take pictures of the broken hinge if anyone is interested.
