Where is the Security Chip in the R61 (7733)?

#1 Post by ParatoOptimal » Sat Jul 13, 2013 7:23 pm

Where is the security chip on an R61?
Can it be accessed without dismantling the whole laptop?
I have a 7733.

I'm not sure if an alarm went of on my laptop or on the nearby TV when I disconnected the CMOS battery.
I'm looking for the security chip. Is it on the top or the bottom of the system board.
Is it accessible from the top or is the structure frame or the PCMCIA bay in the way?
If I can't reach it or a trace in the system board to access the chip, I'll have to disassemble almost every FRU.
The chip could be any of the following ...
24RF08
P24S08
PS08
L08
24RF08 - 8 pin
24RF08 14 pin
ATMEL 8356908 or AT56908
PC8394T
LSI
24C01
C46C1

Thank you for your assistance.

The R61 Hardware Maintenance Manual says it's soldered on top of the motherboard, near the front edge (to the left of the DIMM sockets; page 104 of the HMM). It looks like you also need to remove the PC Card slot assembly. I don't think it would be the 24RF08 (or any variation thereof); that's the EEPROM

Thank you.
I saw that in the manual when I searched for the first chip in my list. I later found that it maybe a different chip.
Are you saying it's a chip that's not in my list?
To remove the CMCIA slots, I have to dismantle almost EVERY FRU.
I was hoping to find it within view or to find some trace points I could access.
I was hoping it was under the black tape-like shielding.

See if this helps: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=194311
Or this: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Embedded_ ... _Subsystem

I think the security chip is a 16-pin M25P32.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
