R61i won't turn on after motherboard replacement

#1 Post by thinkPadMAC » Tue Oct 01, 2013 4:30 pm

Dear thinkpad forum users.
I need your help.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad R61i (8918-CJG).

After my nVidia motherboard crashed I have changed it for a Intel one bought at ebay (42X6813 which I guess is the same as 42W7825??) .

After installation of the motherboard and plugging in the bat. and the AC power nothing happens:( None of the leds are on, there is no reaction for the start button. (btw. static discharge thing also does not work)
There is 20V on the connector on the board.

The power supply with previous motherboard was 20V but I have found out that the new one should be powered from 16V. So if there is some kind of overvoltage protection circuit this may cause the problem? But shouldn't it at least work on the battery?

As you can see I have no idea what to do now. Should I have a look for a faulty fuse? (would anyone have some schematics? ;)
Does it have something to do with the BIOS?

I would really loved to use my ThinkPad again ;)
Thanks,

Neil

Hi thinkPadMAC, welcome to thinkpads.com. Too bad it's problems that brought you here.

Without additional info any diagnoses is just going to be guesswork, but it sure looks like you received a broken motherboard.

Post your R61i complete type number, and maybe we can tell if there is some kind of mismatch with the board. Also, a link to the ebay ad from which you purchased the replacement board might give us some insight.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Thank you Neil,

The type number is 8918-CJG it's T2330(1.60GHz), 2GB RAM, 160GB 5400rpm HD, 15.4in 1680x1050 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M.

Could you could tell me what steps I should take to make sure that the 'new' motherboard is dead?

I don't want to post a link to a ebay auction yet, just in case this is my fault.
In the auction they said that this is a 42X6813 but the sticker says that its 42X6812.

Your R61i will always need a 20V power supply, not 16V.
I'm not familiar with that mobo number 42X6813, maybe a refurbished board?
I'd say send it back if you can, for either a replacement or a refund.

Thank you.

I will send it back.

Could you recommend another motherboard for my R61i?
It does not have to be the out of the box solution I can play with it a little (make some kind of frankenpad as you call it :) )
The best for me would be to buy in Europe.. maybe http://www.lapstore.de??

I refuse to throw away my thinkpad :)

You'll need to look elsewhere for 42W7825.
That shop in Germany doesn't have it.

Thanks RealBlackStuff,

But what I wanted to ask you guys its - Is it possible to use other motherboard (from T series or X series?)
I don't mean would it fit in the chassis, just, will the T2330 and display be compatible?

Thanks
