Firewire on R5x

Does anyone know what the difference is on a firewire mainboard vs a non-firewire mainboard? Missing just the connector, or circuitry too?
T61p, RT61 frankenpad(the first), W500(s), T500, W700 (king beast)

There's no FW circuitry an any T43 board.
AFAIK it's only the missing connector on some R52 boards.
The soldering connectors for the FW are on every R52, don't know though if they work...
