R60 BSOD / Parity error - new mobo needed?

#1 Post by cleavet » Tue Mar 11, 2014 9:52 am

I have an R60 that's crashing at startup and my diagnostics lead me to believe that the video adapter is at fault. About 50% of the time the system boots to a completely blank screen, where not even the backlight is on. The other 50% of the time it BSODs with the dreaded "parity error" message.

Specs: 9462-A19, 3GB RAM, W7 Pro, 60 GB HDD, ATi X1400 128MB.

Here's what I've done so far after searching the forums:
1) Pulled the wireless card and disabled in BIOS
2) Updated to the latest wireless card drivers
3) Pulled individual memory chips

None of the above improved things.

4) Booted into Safe Mode - This brought the system up and allowed me to log in, but graphics were very sloppy.
5) Uninstalled driver for video adapter - This cleaned up the graphics.
6) Installed Vista X1400 driver - BSODs began again.

I'm reasonably sure the video adapter is at fault and I need a new mobo, but have I missed any diagnostic steps? Should I check for a BIOS upgrade, or possibly replace the CMOS battery?

Thanks for any suggestions.
Tom C.

I'd tend to say that you've done just about everything...and it does seem that the GPU has gone haywire.

One last thing I would do would be to run memtest86 on RAM, one stick at the time then both, swapping them throughout the slots.

If that comes back clean...you'll be looking for a new planar.

Good luck.
