Help with wireless upgrade on z61t

#1 Post by 3h » Tue Mar 11, 2014 4:25 pm

My wife's z61t was starting to behave badly, and when I found the following page, I realized it needed to be cleaned:

http://www.fixya.com/support/t1447630-z61t_overheating

I figured I would have the wireless card replaced at the same time, so I went on eBay and found the following card, which I bought:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/350616994167?ss ... 1439.l2648

I picked the z61t up today and ran Everest Home edition, and was surprised to see that the network card that was listed was the same as before (Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG). Furthermore, under "Windows Network", the entries for "Bluetooth Device" and "Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet" had disappeared. The card that was replaced is identical to this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-FRU-41W1 ... 1157399526

I am confused. Did I buy the wrong card or did the guy who replaced the card make some mistake or is Everest giving wrong info? Does anybody have a possible explanation?

You replaced a WWAN card with a WLAN card, if one is to judge by the pictures...

Thanks for your reply. But why does Everest list both of them as "Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG"?

Everest is mis-reading something.

What does the Device Manager state?

Right.

Because the wireless card was never replaced.

The new wireless card got inserted into the WWAN slot and probably can't be read from there.

Now, what does Device Manager say about your Ethernet and Bluetooth?

The Ethernet was disabled, but I have now enabled it. The Bluetooth is missing.

Oh my what did they do with that poor machine...

I'd be re-visiting whoever worked on that Z61t for you with a mallet in one hand and ThinkPad in the other...seriously.

Just have them fix what they messed up.

If they can't/won't...we can troubleshoot further...

Good luck.

P.S. Do you have any idea whether the card that I bought on eBay should work in the z61t (once it has been moved to the correct slot, without messing with the BIOS)? And if I need new drivers for it, do you have any idea where I could obtain the necessary drivers?

(here is the link to the card: http://www.ebay.com/itm/350616994167?ss ... 1439.l2648)

Yes it should work.

It's Lenovo (atheros) abg card and the drivers are available on their website.

That's going to be the least of your problems once everything else is hopefully sorted out...

Picked up the z61t today, installed the drivers from Lenovo, and now everything seems to work OK. Thanks again for the help!
