Will a Seagate Hybrid ST1000LM014 work in a z60m?
Will a Seagate Hybrid ST1000LM014 work in a z60m?
I have a z60m with a Toshiba MK8032GSX 80 GB HD. I would like to replace the HD with a larger and faster HD. Will a Seagate Hybrid ST1000LM014 (http://www.computer.is/vorur/7900/) work in a z60m (without any BIOS modification)? Or is there a better (and less expensive) option?

It will work.
However, hybrid drives have gotten very mixed reviews and I'd personally go for a SSD, especially at today's prices.

Thanks for your response. Would you be able to give some examples of inexpensive SSDs that would work in the z60m and that you would recommend?

How big do you need it to be and what are you looking to spend?3h wrote:Thanks for your response. Would you be able to give some examples of inexpensive SSDs that would work in the z60m and that you would recommend?

ca. 100 GB or more, preferrably less than $100 - 150.

Crucial M4, Samsung 830, Intel 320 series all come to mind, and can be found in NOS (New Old Stock) condition within your price range.3h wrote:ca. 100 GB or more, preferrably less than $100 - 150.

Don't know if you have purchased your SSD yet, but here are two options you could look at:
$130 Samsung 840 Pro 128GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 2W00ZD1548
$152 Samsung 840 Evo 256GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 2W01AZ5550
I'd probably get the 256GB one. Both are faster than the drives arjkula mentioned, though on SATA 1.5GB/s or SATA 3GB/s it's probably not a big deal.

I only recommend drives that I've personally tested and had working with zero issues. In ThinkPads of this era...
EVO is garbage, 840 Pro is OK and 830 is by far the best Samsung SSD ever.

Tell me how the Evo is garbage.
And by the way, I have used an Evo. And the Crucial M4 (owned two of them!) And various others.

Re: Will a Seagate Hybrid ST1000LM014 work in a z60m?
Huh...
EVO is TLC which is inferior to MLC which - in turn - is inferior to SLC.
Once the "pseudo SLC" layer of NAND on EVO is exhausted under heavy use, the speeds drop to HDD levels. Check AnandTech's review, showing a drop to 30MB here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7173/sams ... s-tested/6
I am paid to provide and support stable and reliable systems. Not testbeds.
Therefore, I only recommend - even to non-paying entities such as forum members - systems and components that have been proven to work without glitches.

It may work for some people, but is definitely not a drive I would recommend, or install in a customer's system.Minimum performance drops down to around 30MB/s, eugh
