R31 Drivers?

#1 Post by Dos3.1 » Wed Jan 28, 2015 6:17 pm

I just got my R31 "back on the road" with XP pro SP3 (tried Puppy Linux Wary and it worked, but I needed XP for some apps). It's humming along pretty good with only 248 MB of RAM and a P3 1.13 GHZ processor!

It's handling the Websites I'm using with no problems with the latest Firefox (haven't tried playing videos on it, yet). Sometimes the hard drive is a slight bottleneck on speed, but that could probably be fixed with a faster drive (if it's not a processor limitation that slows it down "thinking" - could be, bumping up the RAM may help). But, all-in-all this is still a useful machine, amazingly! But is that really a surprise for an IBM-era Thinkpad? ;)

The only real issue I'm having with the machine is the lack of video drivers for the Power Management functions. I'd like to be able to have it "sleep" and/or hibernate, and also power manage the screen, but until I update the drivers that won't be possible, as far as I know. I get several yellow "drivers out of date/not installed" warnings when I look at Hardware>Device Manager.

I tried the automatic drivers update in XP but got no results. I have searched for the drivers online but so far have come up with nothing (there were listings on various driver sites, but there was nothing to download - Lenovo seems to have deleted any pages for this machine's drivers, too).

Can someone assist with video drivers for this machine? Thanks!

The R31 is working well now with updated drivers, browsing the Web (wireless card, Ethernet and USB cell phone connections all work) and doing email with XP and the latest FF. The power management issue is solved and it can sleep.

It had only one 256 RAM card in it and was a bit sluggish. I found another 256 RAM card in my parts collection and installed it. Big difference! MUCH faster now (which is not really a big surprise, but it's nice to see). Next, I'm on the search for two 512 cards to max this unit out to 1GB.

Not the most robust model (Acer build), but it does fine for a bedside computer for light browsing and reading ebooks.
