Re-entering Machine Type Model in BIOS on refurb R40

#1 Post by JoolsM » Fri May 27, 2005 6:53 pm

I have a refurbed R40. I can't take it back to the secondhand laptop store I bought it from in the UK because I now live in Spain. I have confirmed it wasn't stolen - the Microsoft COA is good and I also have the BIOS password.

The Machine Type model (2681-FGJ) is missing as is the system unit serial number - though this is on the bottom label. The BIOS does show the system board serial number.

Do I need the Hardware Maintenance Diskette? Lots of Googling seems to imply that this is for people who want to bypass the security of the BIOS password. However when I boot into BIOS there doesn't seem to be anyway to change or enter these numbers...

Please can anyone help? Any advice gratefully received!

The maintenance diskette is needed - unfortunately this is only supplied to authorised ThinkPad servicers/retailers as it can obviously be used for dodgy purposes.
