Resurrecting Heirloom R31 With Wifi Via Buffalo Wireless Modem Possible?

#1 Post by jimwg » Fri Apr 03, 2015 12:07 pm

Greetings!

I defer to the expertise here!

I have a heirloom basic R31 Thinkpad I wish to resurrect and a WHR-G301N Buffalo AirStation Nfinitimodel wireless router -- the back label reads “root” Router On, 192.168.11.1 and Router Off 192.168.11.100. Since the R31 has no modem or wifi of its own I’m wondering whether I can use the wireless router’s Ethernet plugin to substitute as such to connect our home’s cable wifi. I will be running Linux Mint on it to maintain a state of art OS on such a tiny HD. I’ve no clue what settings to set or configures to use but I’m eager to learn directions!

Any info would greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your tribute to Spock!

Greetings Jim,

Sure, I don't see any reason why the R31 won't work just fine connected to the router with ethernet cable. There shouldn't be any configuration to do at all. Ethernet is pretty much plug-n-play on almost all Linux distributions.

Oh wait! Do you want to use the Buffalo router as a network adapter to connect to your home wireless access point? If that's it, then the answer is maybe. You'll have to set the Buffalo up as a wireless bridge...I think. I don't have much experience with such things, so maybe someone else would be better equipped to answer. Stay tuned.
