Wireless Internet Speed Reduced through Router

I have a Dlink 11mb wireless router (614+) connected to an ADSL Modem. I also have a wireless adapter on my desktop which delivers accurate internet speed, where the R40 Laptop 1.4 Centrino with an INtel Pro 2100 Mini PCI Adapter, which used to recieve an accurate internet speed of 256 K but now only recieves a speed of 9K. I am wondering if any of the updates or other changes (none that I am aware of ) have changed the ability for the Laptop to recieve speeds similar to 256K. It cannot be the Wireless Modem as the desktop recieves accurate internet speed, so it is something with the laptop.
