For years now I've thought it was strange that my Z61t screen stayed on when I closed the lid. I have "Do nothing" selected as the lid close action in Power Manager. On my previous Thinkpads this setting was interpretted as "Turn the screen off, but don't do anything else," but I guess I just assumed my Z61t was more of a literalist.
Recently I learned that there's a magnetic lid switch mechanism on this model, so I tested it with a magnet and, lo!, the screen turned off when I waved the magnet near the LCD bezel above and to the left of the power button.
The weird thing, though, is that I can't find anywhere for a magnet to be mounted that would actuate this switch when the lid is closed. It ought to be about 1.5cm to the left of the power button, but there's no space there. It's just a solid sandwich of the battery, magnesium frame, and the plastic of the keyboard.
What's the deal? Did Z61ts ship with the switch in the screen, but no corresponding magnet to actually make it function? Or was the magnet just slipped in there somehow unmounted? Maybe taped to the keyboard? Even that seems like it would cause the plastic to bulge since there's really no space.

The magnet for the Hall-effect switch is located beneath the keyboard bezel, in the "well" under the lid. Here's a photo of a pushpin dangling by a thread that points to the area where the magnet is located:

Oh yeah, I see that spot now. I guess mine must have fallen out at some point or something.
Man, that's a tiny magnet. Must be 2mm x 2mm x 1mm. Guess I'll keep an eye out for one.
Thanks.

Try finding a defective IEM (In Ear Monitor) earphone. Those things usually have small rare-earth magnets inside.Sweater Fish Deluxe wrote:Man, that's a tiny magnet. Must be 2mm x 2mm x 1mm. Guess I'll keep an eye out for one.
