R40 DVD Drive Replacement?

#1 Post by hackordie » Tue Jun 07, 2005 2:04 am

My DVD/CD-RW drive isn't reading some DVDs too well, plus I'd like to be able to write DVDs, so I'm looking to upgrade, sadly I can't afford a true replacement from IBM, so I'm going to get my hands dirty with an OEM drive. Is there anything I need to know? Is this drive 12.7mm? I think it is, I just need confirmation. I was really looking forward to a uj-845-b by Panasonic, but it appears this is a 9.5mm drive. Does this mean I'm out of luck? I had wanted a Dual-Layer and DVD-RAM drive, I like DVD-RAM, but I could settle for a Nec 6500a (12.7mm, I think) if needed. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Sorry if this has already been asked, just point me in the right direction.
Thanks!
EDIT: I'm reading conflicting reports about the uj-845-b, is it 12.7mm or 9.5? Does anyone know for sure?

Hello Hackordie,
Well, the NEC-6500 would be fine, it is a dual-layer device. How do I know? I have just ordered myself a new IBM 92P6014 drive from www.shentech.com , and yes, you guessed it - based on the NEC-6500, with a black IBM bezel :)

Price is around US $188- from them, I live in South Africa, so works out at US $225- for me....expensive, but still only half of what it would have costed me locally at our IBM Sales Parts Division.

Hope this helps a little. If you contact Shentech, you could speak to a guy called Chris Tan-very helpful.

edit: found te link for you - http://www.shentech.com/ibmth92mudvu.html

Best regards,
MrBean.

I will certainly do so, I currently am using a NEC-6100 ex-Dell M60 DVD-RW in my IBM R40, but decided to get the dual-layer 6500A drive.......

I should have it next week Thursday-Friday, and I will let you know how it performs.

I've taken the plunge, I bought the uj-845-b from Germany, I'll let you know how it goes, who knows, I might have to sell the uj-845-b if it doesn't work :-) I hope this works, I'm taking risks so you all don't have to! The NEC drive looks good, but doesn't do DVD-RAM or slot loading. That being said, at least you know it'll work!
I'll update you in about two weeks!
Thanks for the help!

Hello Everyone,
Just some feedback - received the drive today, and it works great ;) My R40 back to spec+ again, hehe.

Straight plug and play, no issues, removed 6100 and dropped 6500A in, and burned a CD and a DVD to test functionality.

Me=happy.

Br,
MrBean.
