My first frankenpad R60e!

#1 Post by Half-Saint » Tue May 10, 2016 2:40 am

Last week I got an R60e with a busted screen (the edges were all weird looking) so I decided to give it a bit of a facelift.

Still had a broken T42p in storage so I sacrificed its screen and placed it in R60e - it worked perfectly! Glorious 1600x1200 on a 15" laptop :-) I now call it R60ep.

As I had everything half-disassembled, I wanted to upgrade the CPU but had less luck. Currently there's a Celeron M 430 in there and while it's okay for XP, I'd like a bit more power to have it run Windows 7. None of the processors that I have would work with it.

Is it true that only T5x00 and T7x00 667MHz processors work with an R60e? I tried a T5450 and it wouldn't even power up.

Cheers

Yes, only these 667MHz CPUs will work in a T60/R60.

If you are going to Frakenpad your R60e, I would suggest a Broadcom BCM970015/BCM70015 HD Crystal Hardware Decoder or something like it. You probably want a Core2Duo of 2.0ghz or more. With your 1600x1200 screen you will need a great deal of video processing power.

Thanks for the tip! Where do I put that thing? :-)

Ebay. But before you do, let the resident experts here on the forum tell you what you need. This is a mini PCI-E card. I have not built a frankenpad, I am not an expert on the T60 series and what cards it supports. In the link this HD decoder is a mini PCI-e card with a metal extender to make it a full length card. You can take off the extender if the slot on your motherboard only supports mini PCI-E.

If you went this route you would have to get a USB wifi card a couple of euros or run an ethernet cable for your internet.

I believe R60e that came with Celeron CPUs use the 945GML chipset, which do not support any dual core CPUs. You'd need to swap the board for one that has the 945GM chipset, if you want a dual core CPU.

That's somewhat of a gray area...

My twin boys' R60e originally came with a Celeron CPU but also with a 945 chipset, and has been running a T7200 for several years now...so one needs to check what the chipset actually is and take it from there.

Well there's a chinese seller selling T7400 for about 12€. Maybe I'll just risk it, if I can't find out which chipset exactly my laptop has.
