Thinkpad R40 - help need to locate the security chip on mobo

#1 Post by Tim82 » Mon May 16, 2016 11:50 am

A friend of mine has an oldie Thinkpad R40 (I think, it's a 15" model), which refuses to boot. The beep codes indicate a problem with the system board (especially the security chip), like in this old thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=10892.

My questions:
- is it possible to replace the security chip to solve this error?
- if yes, then what chip should be to replaced and where is this located on the motherboard?

I found a guide on the web, but I'm not exactly sure the mentioned ATMEL 24RF08 chip is the security chip needed to be replaced.

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance!

That Atmel chip is an EEPROM, but not what you are looking for.
Get the R40 HMM (link at top of page) and check page 109.

Thank You, I passed the information to the R40's owner.
