R and T - series ultrabay

#1 Post by wujstefan » Mon Sep 12, 2016 2:29 am

Hello,

I've been running a Frankie project lately, hopefully finished with a nice T601f /w nVidia GPU

However, I've found out that intel's X3100 suits my needs no worse than discrete GPU since all my graphics work I do I could do just as well using the Advanced dock with a graphics card in my PCI-E slot (this has not been tested, but I presume it will work no worse than GPU under the laptop's hood for CAD designs). What's more, I was lucky to buy 2 new (literally new, with SONY batteries 0 cycles etc.) R61i units 15,1" 4:3 - and that actually supported me to rebuild a R61 to a frankie.

Here pops up the question - I've amassed all kinds of Ultrabay Slim accessories (4 Sony bay batteries, extra HDD slots...), would they work w/ ultrabay enhanced? Or maybe there is some sort of mechanical dapter, since AFAIK from the electrical point of view there is no difference between those ultrabays?

Also, are there such accesories like the mentioned bay battery or HDD bay adapter for ultrabay enhanced?

I believe that Ultrabay Slim devices are fully compatible with Ultrabay Enhanced slots. There are sometimes compatibility restrictions between generations (even when the exact same slot is used). For instance, T6x Ultrabay Slim Serial/Parallel Adapter has a mechanical block which will prevent it from being used in a T4x Ultrabay Slim, and the Ultrabay Slim batteries for T4x/R5x and T6x/R6x are not interchangeable. However, I am not aware of any such restrictions between Slim and Enhanced devices in the same generation (in your case T6x/R6x).

+1
T6x/R6x Ultrabay parts are interchangeable.
Ultrabay Slim leave a small gap in the R6x slots, but a piece of carton would fix that.

OK, tested and confirmed with a DVD drive, HDD slot and baterries.

I believe HDD adapters / baterries for Ultrabay Enhanced were pretty rare.

EDIT: after middleton upgrade the system instantly shutdowns 3ms after power up when hdd is in bay. To make the system back on its legs AC and battery must be removed for a couple of seconds.
