Max HDD sizes - A21M & R40

#1 Post by jeffr » Sun Jun 12, 2005 10:17 pm

Has anyone used the Seagate (or other) drives for an R40 (machine type 2722) and for an A21 (2628) Thinkpad?

Are maximum disk sizes in the BIOS or drive speed limitations for the R40 & A21?

IBM only have 80gig HDD (Part # 09N4272) info for these machines.

Would the screw locations for the mounting trays be identical across 3rd party disks or disk models?

Yes, Yes, but I figure 137GB, we shall see eventually, Yes. That drive should work in either!

Hi,

We have cloned the existing 60Gb Hitachi HDD from the Thinkpad R40 to a new 100Gb Seagate drive (5400rpm). The computer does not boot (it flashes a cursor after the initial colour Thinkpad screen). The laptop can get into bios, and the HDD is recognised. Also, we have run the PC Doctor diagnostics from CD-ROM boot (which was downloaded from the IBM support website). All the fixed disk tests ran successfully. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can fix this? Cheers.

Victor.

Run FDISK and make sure the BOOT partition is set as ACTIVE.

If you're using Ghost clone again using GHOST with the -ID switch.

Hi,

Problem is solved and thanks for all of your help! I was cloning with Norton Ghost 2002. First, I checked with FDISK and the partition was already set as active.

I then tried doing a windows repair using the Windows XP installation disc - still no love. I figured that I already had a copy of the data on the old drive, so I formatted the new 100Gb drive and did a fresh install of Windows XP - worked great.

That meant that the disk was working properly and definitely compatible with the computer.

I didn't get your message about the -ID switch slagmi, but I did another clone with ghost and it just worked. I guess the first time was just a dirty ghost. I will go and see what all the switches are, particularly -ID.

Once again, thanks heaps for the help.

Victor.
