is it possible to swap R50e motherboard with other R series's?

#1 Post by btc1750ni » Thu Oct 27, 2016 12:32 am

hey guys
i have just seen some R series motherboards on local stores
r51, r52, r61..etc,
and it seems they all use DDR2 ram, which would be a cool upgrade.
any advice?

Only motherboards in R50 or T40 series are compatible with R50e. Your R50e may have a cover over where the S-Video port on other motherboards are and I don't know if that is simply removed.

Only R51e, R52, T43, and T43p use DDR2 limited to 2GB usable.

R60 series is very different, but working examples should be inexpensive to acquire.

IIRC, the R50e's board is physically compatible with T4x and other R5x series.
The only models that have DDR2 are the R51e, R52, and T43.

Not much in the way of upgrades IMO:
- max RAM is still 2GB
- still uses Pentium M processors (no dual-core option)

On the other hand, the R52 and T43 can be modded to use SATA HDDs. Veteran forum member RealBlackStuff is most familiar with the procedure. It involves soldering though.

R50e is also quite likely to have no opening for the docking port on the bottom of the machine, which would prevent a non-"e" planar from fitting into the shell.

thanks for heads up guys

um...it is a dissapointment to know not dual-core possible
regarding the docking port, indeed, my R50e doesnt have any opening for that
so...it seems R51e motherboard is the only option...
or maybe, should i try unsoldering the docking port? (not sure if it is possible...)

any speed advantage to modding for SATA HDDs while we have ultrabay SATA HDDs?
i dont mind using USB DVD-ROM
if there is no speed advantage, i guess i will left that untouched.

btw, how do i know if ATA-133 is supported?
