Price check: G41 in perfect condition

Hello,

More of a price check: I've got three units of G41 type 2881 in great shape; and so two of them are kinda overkill Just wanted to know how much actually these units may be worth.

All of them have a 3,2GHz, 80Gb HDD and 512Mb DDR as far as I remember. All of them also have Intel Extreme graphics.

As much as I like my G40 and wanted a G41, the slowish single core processor, 2GB RAM limit and PATA drive interface were too constraining, and limited me to Win-XP (or Linux). So even though I like my G40, I've abandoned it for a T61 with 6GB of RAM and a SSD running Win7.

So that is the issue that you will have, that will keep you from getting top price.

I would "wide a s s guess" the value at less than $100.

You can do a completed sale listing on eBay to see what the G41 and G40 have sold for.

Well, this is difficult. These systems seem really rare; and getting one in working condition (not to mention cosmethics) seem pretty hard.

My G41 was a low end model with a Celeron, 256MB RAM, a small hard drive, 14" screen and USA keyboard, but it is the only one I have seen in England (UK) to date. It only cost a mere £9 GBP but I spent approx £100 upgrading it to be a top end G41, minus the Nvidia GPU of course. Luckily I already owned a couple of G40, so I could plunder one for upgrade parts for the G41, otherwise it would have been a £150 upgrade! But yes, finding a G41 in decent working condition is not easy, but certainly much easier if you are in the USA. A quick look on Ebay right now reveals only a used G41 sold as individual spare parts at inflated prices.

I don't know the difference between G41 and G40, but I have seem some relatively inexpensive G40 listings on the feebay. I may want to buy a G40 someday for the fun of it....

I used to own an nVidia G41, they seem to be even rarer than the Intel graphics G41s Was pretty good condition however the only thing broken on it was the Ethernet port... ran Windows 7 well for such an old machine (with Aero to boot)

Note that the nVidia models do not support the floppy drive as the heatsink extends to where the floppy would go

That gives some general idea that this is rather common system, and easy to get in a decent shape. Too bad, mine are going to lie on the shelf for another 10 yrs or so

The G40/41 may be somewhat rare, but, what are you going to run on it?

I have an upgraded G40 with a P4, and all I can run is XP, or Linux. The 2GB max RAM on the G40/41 is the killer for the later MS OS. I won't even try Win7 with only 2GB of RAM. I've seen a Win7 desktop with only 2GB, and it was painfully SLOW to use. And that is the problem when trying to keep the old computers in use. The MS OS makes them obsolete.

And that is a pitty, because I have a few even older laptops with only 1GB max RAM, and slower CPUs. They are on XP now and will probably be kept on XP for specific non-64bit software, or moved to one of the Linux variants.

I have a G40 posted on eBay, I priced it at $115 and I think I dropped it from $160.
But mine isn't that great, base XGA display, it is just uncommon and 'rare' because its working.
I installed XP PE on it, so far running good, I should upgrade the RAM but the other TPs need them.
Been meaning to get an SXGA+ cable for it, afraid to try out an A31p panel (want to do an IPS SXGA+ upgrade)

I figure it is a matter of time it'll sell.

Well I own both units (intel and nVidia), and they feel great. You could take a look on the pics how the "intel unit" looks like:

The nVidia unit is even better.

These units are just fine for a lightwork or retrogaming. Flash and Java kills them hard, they have a soul however.

I have a feigning interest in this model, but it's not something I'll shell out dearly for as the interest is purely one of curiosity (I've got enough ThinkPads I don't use already). I watch eBay for deals occasionally. There are a few up for sale in nearly perfect condition though they have gotchas like being Intel GFX or they're not tested etc. Being brutally honest I don't want one bad enough to justify spending more than $60 or $70 on one - and I want to have one of the nVidia units. If it ever happens, great... if not, I'm not heartbroken.

Flash and Java, basically a lot of web surfing is painful with the old machines.
The sites that do a LOT of stuff, put a lot of processing requirements on the computer, and these old guy have a hard time. I use an ad blocker to intercept some of these processor hungry tasks. I will use one of my old laptops, because I like it, then get frustrated at how slow some of the web sites are. In fact as I recall, I can't upgrade Java and several browsers on some of my old laptops, because the CPU does not support a function that they use. So they are gradually getting shunted aside.

I'm curious how Linux will work on some of these old PCs.

The first time I used Linux Mint was on my A31p in 2013, when I got a T30 in 2014, I tossed CrunchBang on it.
They worked well, but the A31p started getting graphical errors, probably from the GPU, & I couldn't map out the ultrabay numberpad so I gave up.

Linux works well but sometimes the x86 distro won't work on the Pentium IV/M machines, so you'd have to test out an i686 or PAE specific distros.
