Any A22P Owners? I have a few questions

#1 Post by LymanSS » Fri Jun 17, 2005 12:03 am

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum. I'm currently looking for a used A22P (checking Ebay and other such places) to replace my extremely well-used 770ED. I've just got a few questions about the A22P which I'm hoping someone can answer for me.

1. Processor upgrades? I managed to upgrade my 770ED from a 266 MHz to a 400 MHz processor (someone then spilled a drink on it, frying the CPU and I had to revert to the old processor). I'd like to know if there are any faster processors that will work in the A22P. I can't seem to figure out precisely which processor it has, so I don't know what sort of socket it is, and what else is available. I also don't know what the BIOS will support.

2. 802.11 and Bluetooth: I'd like to have both of these, and I know that neither were available with the A22P. I know I could just go the PCMCIA route, but I'd like to avoid taking up my PCMCIA slots. The machine does have mini PCI slots. Can anyone tell me whether I can add these features to the A22P using the miniPCI slots? If so, how hard is it to install, including installation of a proper antenna?

3. UXGA Screen. Is this basically the same screen as the one on the R51? My brother has one of those and I love the screen. I'm hoping it's the same.

4. (Dis)Assembly instructions? Anyone have a link to instructions, diagrams or anything useful?

5. How do you like your A22P? Is it solid? Reliable? Does it feel as bulletproof as older thinkpads? Anything to look out for in purchasing a used one?

Thanks very much. I hope there are some A22P users out there. I didn't see many posts about that model, but maybe you're all a bit quiet. Any information or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

A22p info

#2 Post by galbert » Thu Jun 23, 2005 2:00 pm

I have had my A22p for over 3 years and love it. This is my third thinkpad (2 for work. 1- personal). This is my personal one.

It is as solid as expected from IBM.

As far as your questions go, I will try to answer but not in order.

#4 - check out link:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4PER6S and download the pdf, has step by step.

#3 - same screen

#2 - only 1 mini pci slot is available and may be taken by ethernet/modem card. so BT/WIFI may be out of question, but for BT I am using the IBM Ultraport BT module (09N9811) no longer made from IBM but may be found thru searching. Works well with Windows SP2 service pack and Widcomm solutions. WIFI seems only via pcmcia slots.

#1 - Above PDF has part lists and #s may be starting place to find info.

#5 - see beginnning.

Hope this helps - Gary
