Thinkpad R51 - booting problem with battery

#1 Post by didiode » Fri Jun 24, 2005 7:59 pm

Hi -
I have a weird problem. I have a Thinkpad R51 2883-ARU model.

The problem i'm facing is - If i have power cord connected to the laptop, everything seems ok and machine boots properly and i'm able to work.

But if my power is not connected and when i boot the laptop with battery, it wouldn't boot. I see just the first windows start logo screen and then it is just black screen. It doesn't proceed further.

I called IBM support and they asked me to update the Batter Maximiser and Power management utilities. I downloaded them and updated. But no luck, if i run with battery, it wouldn't boot at all and remain in that black screen.

Please help.

No boot on battery

Well, it could be a number of things: (a) the battery is toast, (b) the connector for the battery to power the mainboard is somehow damaged, (c) some weird OS problem. Try running the diagnostics on it and see what happens (ie: press the Access IBM button on boot while plugged in). If it is still under warranty - keep contacting IBM about it. Good luck

Fortunately it is under warranty till September this year. They have asked me to send the laptop to IBM.

I run that PC doctor application which came along installed and all the tests came out with status PASS.

I did run that Lenevo Software Update application which checks for all the necessary updates on my laptop and it did update BIOS as well.

Is it advisable to run this Software update application ?? I never had any problem in the first six months. now all of a sudden i'm having this problem.

Is this a major problem ????? Could that be because of high temperature at the bottom of the laptop ?

I'm really worried.

Nick -

Press ctrl+alt+f12 to get your Intel graphics settings, click the "Power Schemes Settings" button, and uncheck the dual frequency check box.

IBM tech support said there is some problem with my Hard Drive and they are sending me a new one.

They said they ran my unit with a temporary hard drive and it worked. I ran all the tests in PCDoctor and all of them passed.

Don't know what was the reason for this problem. Hopefully when i fit in the new hard disk, it will run like before.

I have a 2883 as well and had the same problem. Sent it to IBM, the sent it right back saying I didnt fill in the paperwork properly. Im in school now so I havent bothered trying to send it back cause I cannot be without it at the moment.

What I noticed that the system only locks up when you unplug the ac adaptor and your wireless radio is on, if your wireless radio is off, it wont lock up. Maybe you can try that and confirm that you are having the same issue?

Mike

SeanM

Thanks, that seems to have fixed it when disconnecting the A/C adapter.

For future reference, I found this same information on IBMs site:
