R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
Hoping someone might be able to assist as I am at a bit of a loss with this one.
I picked up a old R61i yesterday with a plan to fix it up and restore it back to life. Bringing old Thinkpads back to life is a bit of a hobby of mine, with this one I have everything working brilliantly with the exception of the trackpoint and trackpad. I cannot seem to get them working. This is what i have tried so far.
* Tested initially in Windows Vista 32bit
* Checked that the trackpad and trackpoint are enabled in the BIOS
* Tested with Linux (Point Linux) with no luck
* Tested with a spare T61p keyboard I had lying around (should be compatiable) to see if this would fix the issue with the trackpad at least.
* Reseated by keyboard and trackpad ribbons to the motherboard.
* Checked the BIOS to see if I could upgrade it but it seems it already has the most recent BIOS being 2.24 (7OETC4WW)
I can use a USB mouse perfectly.
Any ideas on anything else I can try or test? The machine is in great condition so it would be great if I could sort this out. Fingers crossed it isn't a motherboard issue.

Re: R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
Try leaving the trackpad cable out, does the trackpoint now work? (try also that other KB)
Are the Ultranav drivers installed?

Re: R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
Thanks RealBlackStuff,
I've installed the drivers but it looks as if the hardware can't be found, as if the trackpad and trackpoint don't exist.
I've tried your suggestion of testing the trackpoint and trackpad, by themselves but no luck. I'm out of options at this point.

Re: R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
Thanks,
The BIOS was the first thing I checked. Under the Keyboard / Mouse details I made sure they were set to automatic.
I also set the BIOS to factory default to see if that would fix it. No luck unfortunately,
Are there other settings in the BIOS I should check?

Re: R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
Long shot: maybe that R61 has been sitting around for a while with disconnected KB and TP cables.
Those connectors could have gathered dust.
See if you can blow them out and maybe carefully clean the connectors with e.g. a soft toothbrush.
Also, not all R61 models were touchpad-capable.

Re: R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
Have you tried any sort of fiddling with Windows' device manager? If you did not, try going into that and look for 'Mice and other pointing devices'. There should be a 'PS/2 Compatible Mouse' entry underneath it. Double-click that and head over to the advanced settings tab, then try messing with the sample rate/wheel detection/input buffer length variables for a result. Or maybe remove the check in the check box for fast initialization.
If the trackpoint 'PS/2 mouse' does not show up in the device manager somehow, check the keyboard connector's pins. Some of them might have been bent, though this is a rare case.

Re: R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
Thanks for your suggestions Screamer.
Swapped out the palmrest / trackpad with one from a T61p, funny enough the Windows detected the fingerprint reader but not the trackpad. I also tried two other different keyboards. That tells me it must either must be a motherboard problem or something silly I have completely missed.
Not giving up on this one!

What's the MTM on the sticker on the bottom, looks like: TYPE 1234-ABC
or the first 7 chars. from the System unit serial number in BIOS?

What an oddity though, your R61i has UltraNav and does not detect the trackpad or the trackpoint. At this point, I am pretty inclined to say that you should get a motherboard replacement. I can't think of any other things to check for the trackpoint and trackpad's mysterious inability to work, maybe you could live with a USB mouse?

Re: R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
If you only connect the keyboard and not the palmrest/trackpad, does trackpoint work?
If so forget about the trackpad, or buy another motherboard.

Re: R61i Trackpad and Trackpoint not working
Thanks all. At the moment I am living with a USB mouse and I'll stay that way as it is cheaper than replacing the motherboard.
